Library Hiatus Status: Ended
In case you haven’t heard, the Ruth Mini Mobile Library was placed on a library hiatus on June 1st until further notice. I had no choice to make this decision since I broke my ankle and needed surgery. I have since had the surgery and have been on bed rest recovering for the last four weeks. During that time, we have continued to receive donations which are great, but without consistent events, it’s virtually impossible to convince people that I’m not a severe hoarder on the verge of needing an intervention. Even though earlier this year, we gave away over 1,300 books in a month, our library is full quite literally to the top.
My best friend who is the skinniest person I know has trouble navigating the tiny walk space. I haven’t done an official count, but I’d venture to say that we have around 2,000- 3,000 books right now. Being on bed rest, I’ve had lots of time to think about the future of my library. I’ve tried to come up with ways to give away the books without doing formal events.
We have two ideas, but please let us know if you have any ideas.
- Book Tour – I have researched the locations of some Free Little Libraries and found a few that are near each other. So we thought it would be cool to film ourselves driving to each one and placing a few of our books inside. We have done this a few times, we just never promoted it on social media. If you have a Free Little Library in your neighborhood, and it needs some new books, send us the address!
- Fully Mobile – A few months back, we did a bubble event at Hemisphere Park. We just walked around with a cart around the park. Usually, we have a table, so this is what I call Fully Mobile. Obviously, we would have to modify this because I would have to be in a wheelchair, but I think it can be done. If you have any suggestions for this idea, please comment below.
I’m open to suggestions on how to keep going minimally. Otherwise, we have decided to extend the library hiatus until December 2018 so that we can focus on our big events in April and I can focus on my recovery. We are always looking for volunteers so please let us know if you are interested.
It truly breaks my heart that I can’t be out in the community giving away free books. I appreciate everyone’s patience and support while we get the library back up and running smoothly.
