Movie Review: IT (2017)

I know I said I wouldn’t watch any more new movies until I caught up with the movies reviews for the 900 movies I’ve already seen. Part of me had already accepted that I wasn’t going to see this for a while because I missed several opportunities to see it in theaters. I had seen a new movie in a long time. The last movie my mom and I saw in theaters was Lowriders and that was in May for Mother’s Day.

For me, personally, horror movies are rarely ever scary. Even though this movie was campy, there were still scenes that I thought were pretty scary. The scene where Pennywise bites Georgie’s arm off was so badly done with special effects it made me cringe. The novel is already inherently scary, why ruin it with awful special effects? Whenever IT would transform into those weird people with the melted face, it was a little bit scary. The effects weren’t very impressive with that either though.

I won’t lie I was half expecting this to kind of suck, but I actually thought it was really good. I loved the cinematography in this film. The shots that they used are exactly the reason why I would love to film movies. I’m rarely ever impressed, so any kind of high praise especially for a horror film, is few and far between.

I get that it’s a long novel, but 2 hours for a horror film is just not a good selling point. They would have been better off dragging it out into several 90-minute films. I’m the kind of person who has to be in a certain mood to watch a 2 hour movie. Overall, I enjoyed the film and I would even venture to say it’s going to be the best horror film of 2017.

My Score: 8/10

the internship

Movie Review: The Internship

I don’t normally watch movies with Owen Wilson by choice, but there’s something about Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson together that allows me to stomach them for a short period of time. This is just another cute, feel-good comedy which every once in a while we need. I particularly loved this movie because Dylan O’ Brien is in the movie. He later went onto to star in the Maze Runner trilogy after this. I found this movie relatable because I know the feeling first hand of being in a collective group of misfits.

A lot of people remarked that The Internship was really an advertisement to work for Google. This tactic is nothing new. Jurrasic Park is notorious for its heavy use of advertisements. In this instance, I don’t think that advertising to work for Google is necessarily a bad thing. The fact that the film crosses the line between advertisement and entertainment is what gives it such a low score. Vince Vaughn is a bit over the top with the dialogue, and it borders on cheesy rather than funny.

You’d be surprised to know that you can show a strip club scene in a film that’s rated PG 13. I’ve noticed a lot more swearing being allowed too. I don’t mind it, but I remember how made parents would get whenever that happened.

I really liked the scene where each had to come up with an app. I’ve always wanted to create an app and they make it look easier. It looks really fun to work at Google, but I’m a nerd so what’s fun to me might be incredibly boring to you.

If you watch Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson movies on a regular basis then I think you will enjoy this film. It’s one of those films that is just okay. It’s not bad, but it’s not good either.

bryan cranston

Movie Review: Why Him?

So I saw this movie with my mom, and there are only two words I would use to describe this movie: utter disappointment. I like James Franco, but he was lukewarm at best. Bryan Cranston is too good of an actor for this movie. I’m wondering why Vince Vaughn didn’t play his role but then I realized that Vince Vaughn can’t bring in the money like Bryan Cranston especially during Christmas time. This movie, in my opinion, won second place for the “All the good parts were in the trailer” category. It’s not a bad movie, but if you’re like me and care about not wasting your money, I would Redbox/Netflix it. Also, there was no resolution to the conflict, so as an English major that really bugged me. Overall, there were a few laughs but it definitely wasn’t worth the price of admission.

There were some funny parts to the movie. I liked the fact that they made Kaley Cuoco the voice of his artificial intelligence device. She’s funny and has a very chill and laid back voice which is great for a robot. With the exception of the daughter (who was probably the main character now that I think that about it), I loved almost all the characters in the movie. I’m not sure why this movie was so terrible and unfunny. I rarely think that movies are going to be good just based of the trailer. I’m not saying I thought this movie would good, but I certainly didn’t think it would be this bad.

My suggestion for this movie is to go to your local library and rent this for free, but in all honesty you won’t be missing anything by skipping it altogether. If you would like to watch a good movie with Bryan Cranston, I would suggest you watch All The Way where he plays LBJ. It’s a great film and a much better way to waste your time.

football

Movie Review: We Are Marshall

So I watched two football movies; one was called We are Marshall with Matthew McConaughey as a coach. I don’t particularly try to watch football movies, but I don’t hate them either. This film has an interesting little story behind it. If you like McConaughey, then you’ll love this movie because he does his signature voice. I felt like it was a little long considering it’s 2 hours and 15 minutes. There was way too much build-up to the story. At the same time, I’m not sure what they could have taken out to make it smoother. An hour into the movie and they hadn’t even set up the conflict and then they try to wrap it up in the last 15 minutes when they had two hours to explain the whole movie.

I’m not exactly sure if this movie is worth watching because I know sometimes you have to be in a certain mood to watch a movie that’s over 2 hours. After watching this movie, I feel like it’s worth watching because the story is pretty good. It may even be better than most football movies. I haven’t seen too many football movies, so I’m not exactly on expert on how good the would be considered by a sports fan. As someone who doesn’t care too much about football, I really enjoyed this movie. This is one of those feel good movies, where you expect everything to go well.

It has a good story, but it starts off incredibly slow. It almost seems as if nothing happens in the first hour. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but for some it may be a deal breaker. It really depends on whether you want to waste time or be entertained. Sometimes movies have different purposes. So while it may be a good waste of time, it’s not necessarily the best way to entertain yourself for 2 hours.

bad moms

Movie Review: Bad Moms

When I first watched the movie Bad Moms,  I found it to be a modern take on what it means to be a good or bad mom. Mila Kunis plays the main character. While she won’t win any awards for spectacular acting, it’s a cute feel good movie for any mom. I’ve seen this movie a few times since it’s release. I feel like it’s one of those movies you can watch a few times. It’s definitely worth watching at least once. The storyline isn’t the best, but the jokes and visuals make it worth your while.

The kids are pretty funny in the movie, which I didn’t . I didn’t think the characters of the kids would be that fleshed out and developed. Christina Applegate plays one of the crazy PTA moms and she does such a wonderful job playing that character. She’s a great actress in general. However, Jada Pinkett Smith and that other actress whose name I don’t even know kind of take away from that aspect of the performance.

I was still working at the movie theatre when this movie came out, and there were so many angry moms upset with me because they couldn’t their baby to see an R rated movie. I had to repeatedly explain that it was due to policy, not content. It also got bumped to a smaller theatre several times for more popular movies that week and it sold out a lot faster.

I really liked this movie. I laughed out loud several times. This is definitely a movie you go see with your mom. I wrote this review just in time for the Bad Moms Christmas special, which I’m wondering why they decided to go with a Christmas theme considering Tyler Perry did 7 Madea movies before he made a Madea Christmas movie.

shootings

Another Day, Two More Shootings

I wrote about a shooting that happened in my neighborhood just two days ago, and this morning the news reported that there were two more unrelated shootings in my neighboorhood at 3:45 AM today. They found one man at the gas station, and they found the other man down the street from my house; both of them were Hispanic men in their 20’s. Less than 1/4 of these shootings make it on the news. Usually what happens is everyone thinks everyone else is going to call the police or 911. No one wants to get involved, so these incidents often go unreported. I think if the police had a better relationship with the people in this neighborhood people might be more inclined to help law enforcement. However, if the police show us they don’t care, people tend to return that favor.

I was lucky enough to sleep through this one, so I didn’t hear all the gunshots early this morning. I’m a heavy sleeper though because I once slept through 17 gunshots after finals week one semester.

It’s sad, but truthfully the police don’t care if you call in that you heard gunshots, they barely even care if you call in a body. It’s just another day to them in this area. That’s why it takes 45 minutes or more to respond to reports in this neighborhood, and that’s if they bother to come at all. Theoretically, a pizza delivery man would get to the crime scene before a police officer, if the pizza places in my neighborhood still delivered here. They stopped a few years because they feel their drivers would be in danger. They stopped accepting orders from the Converse area because the drivers would get robbed all the time.

This week started off with two shootings. It won’t be the last. It won’t even be the last for the month. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were another shooting later tonight.

gunshot

The Piercing Sound of a Gunshot

It was 8 PM. I was posting some links on MCXV and working on my website when I heard it. I had listened to this sound a thousand times before. It was a sound almost more familiar than my voice. The first shot was paralyzing. It took only seconds to realize what was coming next. The second shot seemed louder than the first. The third shot was deafening.

That was the moment when I fully realized I couldn’t move. Seconds of silence passed before I heard the retaliation shots. I heard one, two, three, four, five, six shots. One right after another. I felt scared; My brain couldn’t comprehend what was happening. I was in shock. I had never been this scared before. This was not the first time I’ve ever heard gunshots. In fact, it happens almost twice a week in my neighborhood. Something about this night is different.

I went online to listen to the police scanners, and they were strangely offline. Now I won’t find out what happened until I watch the news in the morning, that’s if anyone of importance got killed. I would not be the least bit surprised if I never find out what happened tonight. Truthfully, I wouldn’t be surprised if no one ever finds out about this shooting. Most of the shootings in my neighborhood go unreported. It’s not hard to see why.

San Antonio is a beautiful city, but with the quick population increases, there has been a tremendous rise in violent crime over the past two years. My neighborhood is notorious for having shootings on a weekly basis, and developers still decided to start building $180,000 homes about 2 or 3 blocks away from my house. I hope the new mayor can get a handle on the rise in crime. We all know the crime rate is going to get worse before it gets better.

sausage party

Movie Reviews: Sausage Party

This movie pushed so many buttons and crossed so many lines. I’m surprised it was allowed in theatres it was so raunchy. Do not watch if you are easily offended or can not handle being offended multiple times throughout the movie. It gets intense during some scenes, so please I’m begging you DO NOT bring your kids to see this. This movie makes South Park look like a kids show. Overall, it wasn’t good, but it wasn’t bad either. No score because I honestly can’t decide how to rate it.

The strange thing about Sausage Party is that when I saw this movie the first time, I was in shock because many of the characters were food and it just seemed strange. When I saw it the second time, I saw the characters as people, and it became much less shocking. Funny how that works. I remember working during this movie’s theatrical run and we had so many teenagers trying to sneak in.

It’s hard to say whether this movie is good or bad. It’s good because it has a decent storyline and the shock value is high, but some of the jokes are incredibly tasteless and not that funny; not to me anyway. I know some people enjoy that kind of humor and that’s perfectly fine. Then this movie is perfect for you.

The tricky part is determining whether or not it’s worth seeing in the theatre and my humble opinion, the answer is no. For someone like me, who chooses their movie carefully now that I have to pay full price for the tickets, I would have waited for the DVD to come out and either purchase it or check it out from the library.

Movie Review: Resident Evil 7: The Final Chapter

I was lucky enough to see this for free with my best friend. I rewatched the whole series on TV, and while this was certainly a more high definition movie, it just didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The gore was fairly good, but this is not supposed to be a horror movie, so it felt a bit out of place. Resident Evil has always been pretty brutal when it comes to death, but I felt like they went over the top and not in a good way. There was no need for the jump-scares like I said this is not a horror movie. It was jam packed with action from beginning to end, and for me, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

If anything the story and the entire franchise was wrapped up quite nicely, and I was satisfied in that aspect. There were quite a few inconsistencies, but nothing regular people would notice. Overall it was decent, but it wasn’t quite amazing.

I didn’t exactly have high hopes for this film, but I left feeling dissatisfied. I’m almost glad I didn’t have to pay for this movie after all. I will say that I did enjoy the fight scenes. They were well put together, and the actors did a great job of making it entertaining.

I think you if enjoyed the entire series, then you might like how they ended the series. It’s not bad; I think I had higher expectations for this film. After watching all of the movies in succession, I figure it would be a little different than what I saw. This movie is maybe one of the select few movie/franchise that I would want to see in the theatre.

tortilla shortage

The San Antonio Tortilla Shortage of 2017

Yesterday, I posted a blog called The San Antonio Gas Shortage of 2017, and the media turned a simple misunderstanding into a massive city-wide panic. Well, San Antonio is about to be in for another devastating blow. I went to my local HEB this morning at 8 AM, and they were already running low on food. They were limiting everyone to 2 of everything. That’s if there was more than two. There was a sign with all the food they were limiting.

tortilla shortage san antonio 2017

My question is: how is a mother supposed to feed her family with only two packs of tortillas for the whole week? That’s not right.

You thought it was crazy when we were allegedly not running out of gas?

Things will get crazy if there’s a real tortilla shortage. I searched on social media and #tortillashortage had a few posts on Instagram and Facebook.

We are blessed here in San Antonio that we only got a sprinkle of rain compared to what happened in Houston. I hope things will go back to normal soon. I don’t think people can handle the chaos and the uncertainty. Stores are raising prices because of the hurricane, but I wouldn’t feel so bad about paying more if I knew where the money was going. If it’s for hurricane relief, then I’m okay with it. There have been a lot of stores in Texas that have gotten accused of price-gouging. We haven’t had any cottage cheese in the grocery store for weeks now. I cannot believe how expensive groceries are now, especially over the last few weeks.

There are many of us in San Antonio living below the poverty level. Some families rely on our neighborhood HEB to feed their families. I hope that during this time we can come together and show the rest of the country what it means to be a Texan.
